Martini de Tartufo
5 minutes
1 Servings
Medium
Instructions
Ingredients:
2 ounces bourbon whiskey
3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup
4-5 fresh blackberries
6-8 fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish
Ice cubes
Optional: splash of soda water for topping
Instructions:
Muddle Ingredients:
In a cocktail shaker, add the fresh blackberries, mint leaves, and simple syrup. Gently muddle using a muddler or the back of a spoon until the berries are crushed and the mint is fragrant.
Add Liquids:
Add the bourbon and lemon juice to the shaker.
Add Ice and Shake:
Fill the shaker with ice cubes, seal tightly, and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds until the mixture is well-chilled.
Strain:
Double strain the mixture into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine-mesh strainer to remove fruit pulp and mint bits.
Garnish:
Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and a blackberry. If desired, top with a splash of soda water for a lighter finish.
Notes:
Freshness Matters: Use ripe, juicy blackberries for optimal flavor. If blackberries are out of season, thawed frozen berries can be a good substitute.
Mint Tips: Be gentle when muddling mint, press rather than tear to avoid bitterness from the leaves.
The Blackberry Smash is a modern twist on the classic Whiskey Smash, which itself dates back to the 19th century. The original Smash was a simple blend of spirit, sugar, water, and mint, designed to be refreshing and easy to prepare. The introduction of fruit-like blackberries, adds both visual appeal and layers of flavor, bridging the gap between a traditional Smash and a modern fruit-forward cocktail.
Try swapping bourbon for rye whiskey for a spicier profile, or use rum for a Caribbean-inspired version. Adding a few dashes of aromatic bitters can also deepen the flavor complexity.
