The Vesper Martini made its debut in Ian Fleming's 1953 novel "Casino Royale," the first book in the James Bond series. In the novel, Bond famously orders the cocktail while at the casino, instructing the bartender on how to make it to his exact specifications. The cocktail is named after Vesper Lynd, the alluring double agent who captures Bond's heart in "Casino Royale." Bond describes the Vesper Martini as "shaken, not stirred," a phrase that would become synonymous with the character and his penchant for finely crafted cocktails.
Ingredients:
3 ounces gin
1 ounce vodka
1/2 ounce Lillet Blanc
Lemon peel, for garnish
Instructions:
Combine Ingredients: In a mixing glass filled with ice, pour the gin, vodka, and Lillet Blanc.
Stir: Stir the mixture until well-chilled, approximately 20 seconds.
Strain: Strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe or martini glass.
Garnish: Express the oils from a lemon peel over the drink by twisting it, then place the peel in the glass as a garnish.
Notes:
Lillet Blanc is used in place of the original Kina Lillet, which is no longer produced. Some enthusiasts prefer Cocchi Americano as a substitute to replicate the original's flavor profile.
Bond's original specification was to shake the cocktail, but modern bartenders often recommend stirring to achieve a smoother texture and clearer appearance.
This elegant cocktail offers a harmonious blend of botanical gin, clean vodka, and the subtle sweetness of Lillet Blanc, making it a timeless choice for martini aficionados.
