Instructions

Ingredients:

  • 3 ounces ginger ale

  • 3 ounces lemon-lime soda

  • 1/2 ounce grenadine

  • Maraschino cherry, for garnish

  • Orange slice or wheel, for garnish

  • Ice cubes

Instructions:

Prepare the Glass:
Fill a highball or Collins glass with ice cubes to chill the drink.

Add Grenadine:
Pour the grenadine over the ice. Let it settle slightly to create a beautiful gradient effect.

Top with Soda:
Slowly add the ginger ale and lemon-lime soda over the back of a spoon (optional) to maintain the layered look.

Garnish:
Garnish with a maraschino cherry and an orange slice for a classic presentation.

Optional Twist:
For a slightly more citrus-forward version, add a splash of freshly squeezed lime or orange juice.

Notes:

Classic Elegance: The Shirley Temple was created in the 1930s for the famous child actress of the same name. It was intended as a sophisticated, non-alcoholic cocktail so she could enjoy a "grown-up" drink at Hollywood events.

Grenadine Choice: Use real pomegranate-based grenadine for richer flavor. Many commercial varieties are artificially flavored, so look for brands with natural ingredients if possible.

Soda Balance: Adjust the ratio of ginger ale to lemon-lime soda to suit your taste. More ginger ale adds spiciness; more lemon-lime soda boosts the citrus and sweetness.

Fun Variations:

  • Add a splash of orange juice for a fruitier version.

  • Use sparkling water in place of soda for a lower-sugar option.

  • Try flavored grenadines like hibiscus or raspberry for a creative twist.

The Shirley Temple is one of the most iconic mocktails in the world. Legend has it that it was invented at either Chasen's restaurant in Beverly Hills or the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu during the 1930s to serve to the young actress Shirley Temple when she accompanied her parents to events. While the exact origin is debated, its appeal was immediate—it offered children a way to partake in the ritual of cocktail hour without alcohol. Over the decades, it became a nostalgic favorite for generations, often remembered as the first "fancy drink" many people ever had.
