Instructions
Ingredients:
2 ounces gin (London Dry or citrus-forward preferred)
1 ounce freshly squeezed orange juice
1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 ounce honey syrup (see Notes)
1/4 ounce elderflower liqueur (optional, for floral depth)
1 dash orange bitters (optional but recommended)
Ice cubes
Garnish: dehydrated orange wheel or fresh orange twist
Instructions:
Muddle Citrus Aromatics (Optional):
If you’d like a more fragrant finish, gently twist an orange peel in the shaker before adding the ingredients, then discard. (Optional but enhances aroma.)
Add Liquids:
In a cocktail shaker, combine the gin, orange juice, lemon juice, honey syrup, elderflower liqueur (if using), and bitters.
Add Ice and Shake:
Fill the shaker with ice, seal tightly, and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well-chilled.
Strain:
Double strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass using a Hawthorne strainer and fine-mesh strainer for a silky, pulp-free texture.
Garnish:
Top with a dehydrated orange wheel or a fresh orange twist for a golden, elegant finish.
Notes:
Honey Syrup:
To make honey syrup, mix 2 parts honey with 1 part hot water, stir until fully dissolved, and let cool. It blends more smoothly than straight honey.
Balance & Brightness:
The Gold Canary is all about sunny citrus flavors and a touch of floral sweetness. Adjust the honey syrup slightly for more sweetness or add an extra squeeze of lemon for extra tartness.
Variation Ideas:
Swap gin for vodka for a cleaner, subtler base.
Replace elderflower liqueur with apricot brandy for a stone-fruit twist.
Add a splash of Prosecco on top for a sparkling brunch-friendly version.
Inspiration:
The Gold Canary draws from classic sour-style cocktails, pairing gin’s botanical backbone with honey’s warmth and orange’s bright citrus lift. The result is a lively, refreshing drink with a glowing golden hue, perfect for spring and summer sipping.
