Instructions
Ingredients:
2 ounces cognac (or good-quality brandy)
3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 ounce orange liqueur (such as Cointreau or Triple Sec)
1/4 to 1/2 ounce simple syrup (optional, adjust to taste)
Ice cubes
Garnish: lemon twist or orange wheel
Optional: sugar for rimming the glass
Instructions:
Prepare Glass (Optional):
If desired, rim a chilled coupe or cocktail glass with sugar. Rub a lemon wedge around the rim, then dip it into a plate of sugar to coat. Set aside.
Add Liquids:
In a cocktail shaker, combine the cognac, lemon juice, orange liqueur, and simple syrup (if using).
Add Ice and Shake:
Fill the shaker with ice cubes, seal tightly, and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until well-chilled.
Strain:
Double strain the mixture into the prepared chilled coupe or cocktail glass.
Garnish:
Garnish with a twist of lemon or a thin wheel of orange.
Notes:
Balance Is Key:
The classic Sidecar is a perfectly balanced blend of tart lemon, sweet orange liqueur, and warm, rich cognac. Adjust the simple syrup to taste if you prefer it sweeter.
Glass Rim:
A sugared rim adds an elegant touch and softens the tartness but is entirely optional.
The Sidecar dates back to the early 20th century and remains a timeless cocktail that highlights the nuanced flavors of cognac with bright citrus and a hint of sweetness.
Try This:
Swap cognac for bourbon or rye for a more robust flavor.
Use blood orange liqueur or fresh blood orange juice for a seasonal twist.
Add a dash of aromatic bitters for extra complexity.
